Paul Mikel

I have spent the majority of my life battling weight. I started as a chubby child, and moved from husky boy to overweight teen. I tried my first real diet at age 13. Weight became a serious health problem while in my residency when lengthy hours and severe stress contributed to a lifetime of emotional overeating. I went from one diet to another and would lose 50, 80, even 100 pounds but each time would gain it back and more.

I reached my peak of 365 lbs and realized that I was soon going to die if I did not do something. I made the decision to have weight loss surgery. I lost a large amount of weight relatively quickly. My weight loss reached a plateau and I still had more to lose. I became addicted to exercise and spent hours in the gym. I began to lose again, but my body analysis showed I was losing more muscle than fat. When I stopped obsessively working out, the weight began to come back. I knew I had to change my way of dealing with weight.
I began studying nutrition. Physicians receive little or no education on nutrition while in school or training. I read everything I could get my hands on in the area of nutrition and weight. I knew there had to be a smarter way to lose weight. I decided to work backwards. I started learning about maintaining weight loss. Once I had the tools to keep weight off, I then had to find the correct balance of nutrients to maintain body muscle, as muscle is what we use to most effectively burn off excess fat.
Like many overweight people, I had medical problems. I knew I would have to utilize multiple different methods to accomplish my goal of safe, effective and permanent weight loss.  The last piece came when I realized that I had to eat for longevity as well. That was when I began to study Nutrigenomics or the genetic basis of nutrition.  Through evaluation of one’s personal and family history as well as analysis of genetic information using sophisticated DNA testing, I could not only lose and maintain weight loss but live longer and better.

I have been able to maintain my weight loss for nearly 5 years now and became so passionate about eating for longevity that I decided to start Bodywise Medicine and The Smarter Weigh diet plan.
I began to realize that diet was only a small part of Longevity Medicine. I began to study the emerging field of Anti-Aging Medicine. Anti-aging medicine is a medical specialty founded on the application of advanced scientific and medical technologies for the early detection, prevention, treatment and reversal of age related diseases. This is true longevity medicine. Anti-aging medicine is proactive medicine at its finest, designed to prolong the healthy lifespan of men and women. Physicians again are not trained in proactive health care. We are extensively trained in treatment of disease but receive little or no education in prevention. We are also not given any education on the effects of our medications on our health. If taking a cholesterol lowering medication causes a reduction in a cofactor for optimum heart and blood vessel function then does the treatment really maximize the benefit?
